Tire Chains for Tractors, Combines & Snowblowers: What to Know Before Winter Hits

Why Tire Chains Matter

Tractors and combines are heavy machines, but on ice and packed snow even the best tires lose grip. Tire chains bite into ice and hardpack, giving you:

  • Better traction on ice, snow, and frozen mud
  • Safer operation on slopes and icy yards
  • Less wheel spin, which means less tire wear

Duo-Grip vs. Standard Chains

Duo-grip (tractor) chains are the workhorse for farm use. They have extra cross-chain bars that create more biting edges — ideal for tractors doing loader work, feeding, or snow removal.

Standard ladder-style chains work well for lighter equipment like garden tractors and snowblowers where you need reliable grip without the aggressive bite.

Sizing Your Chains

Tire chains must match your tire size. Check the sidewall of your tire for the size (e.g. 24 x 12 x 12) and match it to the chain's listed fitment. A chain that's too loose will slip and wear; too tight and it won't mount properly.

Installation Tips

  • Lay the chains flat behind the tire and drive onto them, or jack the wheel up
  • Work from the inside of the tire outward
  • Hook the inside fastener first, then the outside
  • Drive a short distance and re-tension — chains settle after the first few rotations
  • Check tension regularly during the first hour of use
